Maternity Ward Booking in Johannesburg: Six Steps to Follow

Many Johannesburg parents only start comparing a maternity ward in the final weeks of pregnancy, and that is often later than the paperwork needs. At Oxford Midwifery in Saxonwold, booking depends on a few things being in place first: a midwife already caring for you, a letter from your back-up obstetrician, and your medical aid details. Sort those out early and the 36-week booking becomes a short, calm step.

What Makes a Midwife-Led Maternity Ward Different?

A midwife-led unit focuses on low-risk, low-intervention births, with medical help close by. Oxford Midwifery has five fully furnished private birthing rooms, an Active Birth Unit and the option of a water birth in a warm water pool. A fully equipped theatre on the premises is available 24 hours a day for an emergency Caesarean section.

That mix is what many parents weigh up when comparing a private maternity clinic with a large hospital ward: a personal room, a partner who can stay, and theatre on hand.

How Do You Book a Birth at Oxford Midwifery?

There are six steps, most of them before week 36, and each depends on the one before.

  1. Get midwife care early. Oxford Midwifery takes bookings only from mothers who are already under a midwife’s care. If you don’t have a midwife yet, ask the unit about its team of midwives.
  2. Choose a back-up obstetrician. You need an obstetrician who agrees to step in if an emergency Caesarean is needed. Ask early whether they will give you a back-up letter.
  3. Attend your 36-week check. At this visit the obstetrician assesses whether your pregnancy is low risk. If it is, they write a letter confirming your low-risk status and agreeing to act as back-up.
  4. Check your medical aid. The unit is accredited with various medical aid schemes and also accepts private patients who pay cash. Some schemes may ask for a co-payment, so call yours, ask about it and get a pre-authorisation number.
  5. Make the booking. Bookings open at 36 weeks, and a non-refundable booking fee applies to both medical aid and private patients. Ask the team for current fees.
  6. Pack your documents. You need your medical aid card, pre-authorisation number and original ID book or card. Keep them in your birth bag from week 36.

What Can Change Your Birth Plan Late in Pregnancy?

Eligibility is confirmed late in pregnancy, so it can change. The unit’s low-risk criteria include a well mother and baby, a gestational age of 37+2 weeks or more and no intrauterine growth restriction. If your obstetrician finds your pregnancy no longer meets the criteria, they will advise you on the safest place to give birth.

A common mistake is treating the plan as fixed at 30 weeks. Ask your obstetrician early where you would give birth if a midwife-led birth stops being the right choice.

Which Extras Should You Plan Before Labour?

Several services cost extra, so decide on them before your due date: ultrasonography, physiotherapy, a well-baby clinic with vaccines, newborn hearing screening by an audiologist, newborn photography and birth registration on site.

Antenatal classes and breastfeeding advice are also offered. Check which extras your medical aid covers, and take any medical questions to your midwife or obstetrician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my partner stay with me during the birth?

Yes. Oxford Midwifery welcomes partners to stay during birth, and each of the five private birthing rooms is fully furnished with comfort in mind. Loved ones can visit, and the private room gives you space to rest and bond with your baby in the first hours after birth.

What happens if I need an emergency Caesarean?

The unit has a fully equipped theatre on the premises with 24-hour access, so an emergency Caesarean section can be done on site. Your back-up obstetrician agrees to this role in the letter you receive at 36 weeks. Ask them beforehand what an emergency would look like for you.

Is Oxford Midwifery open after hours?

Yes, the unit is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, because labour rarely keeps office hours. Contact the team about availability, current fees or the booking process well before your 36-week check.
